Last Place On Earth
By Rick Hipson
Sat upon our mountaintop, we surveyed the bleak vista of charred bodies upon a newly scorched Earth. The flames could not touch us here; We had chosen our last place on Earth well. As the fires raged below and the burnt scent of death filled our lungs, we could only watch as more debris from the asteroids broke through the atmosphere and added to the scourge.
Our small group huddled tight for warmth and whatever scraps of security we could muster. Starvation seemed our only probable salvation. Then, as the acid rains poured down, even that became washed away, unhurried.
